Frequently Asked Questions

How does someone qualify for services?
To qualify for services through Bossier Council on Aging, individuals must be at least 60 years old, reside within Bossier Parish, and have a current assessment on file. Services are specifically designed to support seniors who have no other available assistance to complete the tasks they need. This assessment helps us determine the level of support required and ensures resources are allocated fairly and effectively.

Do you provide services to anyone under 60?
Yes, in certain cases. Individuals under 60 may be eligible for transportation services through Medicaid, and we also provide support for caregivers of those aged 60 or older. Additionally, spouses of individuals who are at least 60 years old may qualify for some services. These exceptions help extend care to families and ensure that those assisting older adults also receive the support they need.

Does my income determine if I qualify?
No, your income does not affect your eligibility. Our services are not limited or determined by income, race, disability, or religion. However, access to services and placement on waiting lists is based on your Needs-Based Assessment score, which evaluates the urgency and level of support required. This approach helps us serve those in the greatest need first.

I need assistance with applying for Medicaid — can you help me?
Yes, we’re here to assist. Medicaid applications are handled by appointment at our Bearkat site. To schedule an appointment, please call our office at 318-741-8302. For additional information, you can also visit the
Louisiana Medicaid website or the Department of Children and Family Services for SNAP.

What if my needs are greater than what you are able to do for me?
If your needs go beyond the scope of what we can provide, we will connect you with additional resources. We maintain a network of referral partners throughout the community to help ensure your needs are met. You can also visit
Louisiana 2-1-1 to find additional health and human services in the Bossier area.

Do you offer utility assistance?
While we do not provide direct utility assistance, we can refer you to the Bossier Office of Community Services for support. They may be able to help with utility-related needs. You can reach their office at 318-747-1045 for more information.

Do you do home repairs and/or modifications?
Our agency does not offer home repairs or modifications. However, we occasionally work with local volunteer groups who may be able to assist with these types of needs. If you’re looking for help maintaining a safe living environment, we can explore available referrals on a case-by-case basis.

How far in advance do I need to schedule transportation for medical appointments?
Medicaid recipients must schedule their transportation through their designated Medicaid provider. For non-Medicaid clients, we ask that you give us a 7–10 day notice when requesting a ride. This advance notice helps us coordinate routes and ensure availability, especially for medical appointments, dialysis, or therapy sessions.

Do you provide housing assistance?
We do not provide housing assistance directly. However, we can supply a list of senior and low-income housing options within Bossier Parish, including information about Section 8 housing. This list can help you find suitable and affordable housing in the area.

If I have a concern about a senior in Bossier Parish who is being abused or neglected, whom do I contact?
If you believe a senior is being abused, neglected, or exploited, please contact Elderly Protective Services immediately at 833-577-6532. This service is managed by the Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs and is dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of vulnerable seniors in our community.

How We're Funded

We’re proud to serve the seniors of Bossier Parish with the support of vital public partnerships and generous community contributions. Our funding structure reflects a shared commitment to honoring and uplifting older adults in our region.

Primary Funding Partners

Our operations and services are made possible through core funding from:

  • Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs (GOEA): As our primary funder, GOEA provides critical support through the Older Americans Act and other federal and state initiatives.
  • City of Bossier City: Municipal support from Bossier City helps sustain local programs that improve the lives of our seniors.
  • Bossier Parish Government: Funding from the parish government enables us to expand our reach and ensure seniors across the region receive the support they need.

Community Support

We are deeply grateful for the individuals, families, and organizations who contribute through donations, volunteer time, and in-kind support. These contributions directly enhance the services and experiences we can provide to our seniors.

Financial Transparency

We maintain full transparency in how funds are allocated and used. You can view our latest public filings here:

Each dollar we receive is used thoughtfully and responsibly to further our mission: to enrich the lives of older adults across Bossier Parish with dignity, care, and respect.
